Ric Flair’s Controversial Run in AEW: Tony Khan Addresses Backlash

Ric Flair’s arrival in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has not been without controversy. The wrestling legend joined the company to work with his old friend Sting as The Icon prepares for his final match at next March’s Revolution PPV. However, some fans have expressed their disinterest in seeing Flair after resurfaced sexual misconduct claims against him.

The controversy surrounding Flair’s past behavior has sparked a backlash among AEW fans. Many who were initially willing to look past it as they bid farewell to Sting had second thoughts after a promo he cut that reminded them of some of the things he has been accused of in the past.

In an interview with the New York Post, AEW owner, president, and head of creative Tony Khan addressed the decision to have Flair on the shows. Khan revealed that Sting is “very loyal” to Flair, as he feels he owes his career to The Nature Boy. The upcoming Revolution PPV will be held at Greenboro Coliseum, a venue with historical significance for both Flair and Sting.

Furthermore, Khan disclosed that AEW’s partnership with Wooooo! Energy means that the promotion is not paying Flair, but rather, they are receiving payment for his appearances. Khan stated, “We’re not paying Ric Flair; Ric Flair is essentially paying us. We’re getting paid by Wooooo Energy for all of his appearances, so we’re collecting revenue from them.”

While the financial arrangement may benefit AEW, it does not address the concerns and criticisms raised by the fans regarding Flair’s involvement. The controversy surrounding Flair’s past actions continues to overshadow his presence in AEW.

As the conversation between Khan and the New York Post focused primarily on plans for Sting’s retirement, the interview did not delve into the backlash from AEW fans. It is unclear how Khan would have responded if the criticism towards Flair had been the main topic of discussion.

AEW’s decision to have Flair on their roster has undoubtedly divided the fanbase. Some argue that his past should not define his present, while others believe that his presence undermines the company’s commitment to inclusivity and accountability.

Only time will tell how AEW and its fans navigate through this controversy. As for Flair, he will continue to be a part of AEW’s programming leading up to Sting’s final match at Revolution. Whether or not the controversy will subside remains to be seen.
