WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER has made history once again, as he retained his title in a historic win on tonight’s episode of WWE RAW.
In the main event of the post-Payback and Labor Day edition of RAW, GUNTHER successfully defended his championship against Chad Gable. This victory solidifies GUNTHER’s reign as the longest in WWE Intercontinental Championship history.
GUNTHER’s reign surpasses the previous record of 454 days, which was held by WWE Hall of Famer The Honky Tonk Man since June 1987. The Ring General claimed the title from Ricochet on the June 10, 2022, episode of SmackDown. Currently, GUNTHER stands at an impressive 452 days, and the new record will be officially set on Thursday, September 7.
This was the third singles match between GUNTHER and Gable, with tonight’s bout serving as their championship rematch. Their first encounter took place on the July 31 RAW, where GUNTHER emerged victorious in a non-title match. Gable then had an opportunity to challenge for the title on the August 21 RAW, but he won the match by countout. However, GUNTHER proved to be too formidable an opponent once again and successfully defended his championship.
The Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC, played host to tonight’s thrilling RAW main event. The WWE Universe was treated to an intense match between GUNTHER and Gable, as both competitors left everything in the ring.
