WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER has etched his name in the history books once again. The leader of Imperium has now become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history, surpassing the previous record set by WWE Hall of Famer The Honky Tonk Man.

GUNTHER’s remarkable reign began on June 10, 2022, when he captured the Intercontinental Title from Ricochet on WWE SmackDown in Baton Rouge, LA. Since then, he has successfully defended his championship against a formidable list of opponents.

Among the challengers that GUNTHER has vanquished in televised matches are Ricochet in a rematch, Shinsuke Nakamura, Sheamus (twice), WWE Hall of Famer and current United States Champion Rey Mysterio, Braun Strowman, Drew McIntyre, Xavier Woods, Mustafa Ali, Matt Riddle, and Chad Gable. GUNTHER’s most recent victory against Gable on RAW’s main event solidified his historic reign.

In addition to his televised defenses, GUNTHER has also defended his title in 50 non-televised live events, further establishing his dominance. However, four of those matches ended in disqualification, including encounters with Sheamus, AJ Styles (twice), and Ricochet.

The WWE organization commemorated GUNTHER’s milestone by sharing a graphic on Twitter, declaring, “History made.” This achievement did not go unnoticed by WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H, who took to Twitter to congratulate the Intercontinental Champion and highlight his potential for an even greater legacy. Triple H tweeted, “Defining his own legacy. And this is just the beginning… Congratulations to @Gunther_AUT on making history as the longest-reigning #ICChampion EVER.”

As of now, GUNTHER has not made any public statements regarding his record-breaking reign. However, he did retweet the WWE graphic celebrating his accomplishment and posted a fan-made graphic with the caption of a “writing hand” emoji, further solidifying his confidence and determination.

While GUNTHER’s next title defense remains unknown, wrestling enthusiasts can look forward to seeing him in action at the WWE Superstar Spectacle event in India on Friday.
