Relive Wrestle Kingdom’s Epic Showdown: The Ultimate Ace Crowned at WK18

Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shinsuke Nakamura faced off once again at Wrestle Kingdom 2, showcasing their evolution as top stars in New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Tanahashi, who won his first IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 2006, had established a strong connection with fans through his heartfelt post-match interview where he expressed his love for them. On the other hand, Nakamura, as the leader of the RISE faction, had gained momentum, aggression, and swagger.

By 2008, the debate arose about who deserved to be called the Ace, leading to a battle for more than just Tanahashi’s IWGP title. Ultimately, Nakamura emerged victorious, declaring that he would lead NJPW back to the top of the wrestling world. However, his moment was interrupted by the unexpected appearance of Kurt Angle.

Following Brock Lesnar’s sudden departure and the controversy surrounding the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, Angle won a version of the title that NJPW did not recognize. In an attempt to resolve the confusion, Yuji Nagata challenged Angle at Wrestle Kingdom 2. Nagata aimed to erase the controversy by defeating Angle and retiring his “V3” belt. The match was intense, featuring gripping exchanges of Nagata Lock II and Ankle Lock counters, ultimately ending with Nagata securing a rare submission victory.

After the main event, Angle issued a challenge to Nakamura to unify the two championships and bring clarity to the situation. Weeks later, Nakamura achieved this task, solidifying his place in NJPW’s history.

Wrestle Kingdom 2 also featured a clash between a rising star and a legendary figure. Upon returning from his Mexican excursion, Goto targeted the top stars in NJPW, facing Hiroyoshi Tenzan and challenging Hiroshi Tanahashi. Goto pushed the IWGP Champion to his limits but fell short. However, the opportunity to face and defeat the legendary Great Muta at Wrestle Kingdom was too enticing to pass up. Unfortunately for Goto, Muta’s mysterious powers proved too great on the night.

For fans who want to relive the excitement of Wrestle Kingdom 2, the event is available for viewing on NJPW World. Additionally, international tickets for the upcoming Wrestle Kingdom can be purchased here.
