Pay Up: Details On Puerto Rico Paying WWE For Backlash

That’s a lot of money. WWE is the biggest and most powerful wrestling promotion in the world and various locations want to have the company come to their cities. It means a lot to have WWE run an event, to the point where there is a bidding process for the bigger shows. Now we know just how part of the process went for one of the biggest shows that WWE will run this year.

This weekend, WWE will present Backlash from San Juan, Puerto Rico. During WWE’s quarterly investment call, WWE CEO Nick Khan stated that the government of Puerto Rico gave WWE a “seven figure subsidy” to bring the show to the island. According to Wrestlenomics Brandon Thurston, the figure is close to $1.5 million. This will be WWE’s first premium live event in Puerto Rico since New Year’s Revolution 2005.

“We also received a 7-figure subsidy” for Backlash.

Opinion: This isn’t a surprise as getting a major WWE event, especially with Bad Bunny around, is going to be a huge deal for Puerto Rico. The fact that WWE is also presenting SmackDown on the island makes it even bigger and WWE is going all out to make things feel that much more important. Hopefully it all works out and WWE can go back to Puerto Rico sooner than later.
