Orange Cassidy, the current AEW International Champion, is reflecting on his historic title reign, which has seen him successfully defend the gold on 29 occasions. In an interview with Denise Salcedo, Cassidy revealed that his initial goal was simply to dethrone PAC and take the title from him. However, he never expected to have such a remarkable run as champion.
When Cassidy won the All-Atlantic Championship, which was later renamed the International Championship, he admits that he didn’t know what to do with it. But he decided to defend it as much as possible, allowing wrestlers who aren’t always in the spotlight to showcase their talent.
Cassidy said, “AEW’s roster is very large, and there are tons of people that are just waiting for that opportunity to show what they can do because they’re all very talented. I was able to do that with this championship. I feel that this should be that. I think it should be something that we can show, ‘Hey, we all can do it.’ That’s what I’m most happy, that I was able to make this championship identify as.”
When asked about his favorite defense of the International title, Cassidy couldn’t recall the matches specifically. However, he vividly remembers the pain he felt in each one. He mentioned facing tough opponents like Jake Hager, Big Bill, Danny Garcia, Buddy Matthews, Zack Sabre Jr., and even Katsuyori Shibata.
