MJF Opens Up About His Record-Breaking AEW World Championship Reign
Maxwell Jacob Friedman, better known as MJF, has recently become the longest-reigning AEW World Champion in history, surpassing the previous record set by Kenny Omega. The highly anticipated match between MJF and Omega on AEW Collision proved to be one of the best television matches in AEW history, solidifying MJF’s status as the most complete world champion in AEW. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, MJF discussed his reign and the significance of facing off against Omega.
In the interview, MJF expressed his desire to be the best AEW champion and acknowledged that Kenny Omega was the only other competitor on his mind. He stated, “Here I was coming up on his reign, so I decided I needed to start needling this f—— guy. I needed to prove I am the most complete world champion in the history of AEW. Kenny is the best bout machine. Jon Moxley is this incredible brawler. Chris Jericho is an incredible linguist. All these guys are superb at a lot of things. But I can do it all. I can make you feel any feeling I want you to feel.”
MJF also expressed his gratitude towards Omega, who played a significant role in launching AEW, for passing him the torch as the top dog in AEW. He stated, “I wanted a match with Kenny Omega, the best in the world, in a pay-per-view main event–but on free television because I’m salt of the earth. That is the best match in Collision history, and it’s one of the best matches in AEW history. It was a really big deal for the company, and it really felt like the handing of the baton of who the top dog, bell-to-bell is in AEW. I couldn’t be more grateful that Kenny gave me that opportunity.”
During the interview, MJF also touched upon his AEW contract, which is set to expire in 2024. He mentioned that he knows Tony Khan, the president and CEO of AEW, will offer him a lucrative deal to keep him in the company.
