Payback in Pittsburgh: What Surprises Await?

For a variety of reasons, it doesn’t seem like there’s as much hype for Payback in Pittsburgh tonight (Sept. 2) as there’s been for most of WWE’s recent premium live events. But if the addition of host John Cena doesn’t have you fired up for the show, maybe the possibilities presented by the presence of these stars will get you there.

According to PWInsider, NXT Women’s champion Tiffany Stratton, Jey Uso, and Keiji Mutoh, also known as The Great Muta, are all in town for Payback. While it’s not confirmed why Mutoh is there, Stratton’s presence opens up numerous possibilities for the show.

There have been rumors of a program between Stratton and Becky Lynch, and it’s possible that they could face off at Payback. Whether Stratton interferes in Lynch’s Steel Cage match with Trish Stratus, appears after a Lynch win for a staredown, or attacks Lynch backstage, her involvement in the show is sure to create excitement.

The presence of Jey Uso is also intriguing. In storyline, he quit the WWE roster after his twin brother cost him his match with Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. However, with neither Reigns nor Jimmy Uso on the Payback card, could Jey be planning to jump back into The Bloodline saga?

If Mutoh appears on the show, it could be related to Shinsuke Nakamura’s match with World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins. WWE allowed Nakamura to return to Japan for a match with Muta on the Japanese legend’s retirement tour, and they even inducted Muta into their Hall of Fame. While it’s unlikely that Muta is coming out of retirement, cornering Nakamura would still make for a memorable moment.

It’s worth noting that these stars could simply be in Pittsburgh for personal reasons or WWE-related appointments. However, speculating on their potential involvement in Payback adds an extra layer of excitement to the event.
