Johnny Gargano, one-half of the legendary DIY tag team, recently appeared on the Battleground Podcast to discuss the evolution of his partnership with Tommaso Ciampa. The duo’s journey began in NXT and has now taken them to the main roster on Monday Night Raw. Gargano touched upon various aspects of their career together, shedding light on their original goals, their potential as a team, and their personal growth.
Reflecting on their early days, Gargano reminisced, “Me and Tommaso started in NXT like 8 years ago at this point. And our goal, you know, we always talked about it, was to stay there forever. We loved our run in NXT.” The duo’s chemistry and success in NXT led them to dream about what it would be like to compete on the grand stage of Monday Night Raw.
Gargano revealed, “We always talked about what would happen if #DIY was on Monday Night Raw. And a lot of fans wanted that too! We’ve had our ups and downs throughout the years, but it has ultimately brought us closer together. There is no tag team or unit that has gone through what me and Tommaso have, both on-screen and off-screen. We are closer than we’ve ever been, and we’re excited to show the world what we’re capable of.”
As the interview continued, Gargano discussed the personal growth he and Ciampa have experienced. He mentioned, “I do feel like we are at completely different parts of our life. Literally, me and Candice got married, moved to Orlando, and all three of us lived together in a small apartment for probably a year. We grew together. And now, I’m a dad. Tommaso’s a dad. It feels like it’s #Dad-IY more than #DIY.”
Despite their past betrayals and conflicts, Gargano expressed confidence in their current unity. He acknowledged the possibility of Ciampa turning on him again but stated, “I feel like right now we’re on the same page, and we really want to use our collective forces to try and make this run the best run it possibly could be.”
