New Japan Cup quarterfinal action on March 17 was headlined by a battle of Los Ingobernables teammates, SANADA taking on Tetsuya Naito in the Korakuen Hall main event.

Watch the replay now!

In the end of a thrilling bout, SANADA surprised Naito with his new modified DDT finish, and then surprised all of LIJ with what he did next. Taichi, on Japanese commentary for the card, joined SANADA in ring; a handshake between the two ‘frenemies’ not a surprise in itself after Taichi motivated SANADA to success at tournament’s open. Yet the two would be joined in ring by DOUKI, TAKA Michinoku and Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and as more hands were shaken, a decisively shook Hiromu Takahashi, BUSHI and Shingo Takagi wanted to know what was going on.

‘If I stay in LIJ, nothing new will come of it,’ SANADA said before stating that he was leaving the group. TAKA and Taichi would follow up on SANADA’s words, saying that with their new member, this group of ‘just five guys’ would be ‘headed straight for the top, and to change the face of professional wrestling. As SANADA flatly told the LIJ members to leave, the breakup was complete.

SANADA’s next tournament match will be in the semifinals against Mark Davis.
