On the latest episode of his Kurt Angle Show, WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle shared some interesting insights about the origins of the Eugene character in WWE. Eugene, portrayed by Nick Dinsmore, made his debut in WWE in 2004 and quickly became a fan favorite.
Angle revealed that Eugene was actually based on a real person he knew from Pittsburgh. This person had special needs and would often visit the arena where Angle and other wrestlers performed. Angle explained, “His father worked at the Arena in Pittsburgh, and he was the only backstage person who worked there that was allowed in Vince’s office. Okay. This Eugene kid would come in. Hey, Vince, How are you doing? His dad wasn’t even allowed. Vince is off. Eugene was. So we all took a liking to him. We loved the kid. He was great. He was entertaining to be around. He was always in a good mood.”
Angle continued, “I think that Creative wanted to mimic this kid. And that’s where Eugene was born. Eugene, the character on TV, was born because of Eugene, the person that worked at the Civic Center in Pittsburgh.”
It’s fascinating to learn that the Eugene character was inspired by a real individual and that WWE Creative saw something special in him that they wanted to bring to the screen.
