Controversy persists as AEW’s women’s match falls short of appeasing critics

Last week’s edition of Dynamite featured a one minute women’s match that received criticism from women’s wrestling fans. According to a tweet by TBS via Draven’s Twitter, the match was done to “pacify criticism” (source: TBS via Draven’s Twitter). Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer & Bryan Alvarez discussed the booking of the match, suggesting that a longer match between Britt Baker and someone fans are more interested in would have been a better choice (source: Cageside Seats). On the July 26 Dynamite, Baker faced Taya Valkyrie in a match that lasted almost ten minutes, which was seen as a step up for Baker (source: Cageside Seats).

Taya Valkyrie, the reigning AAA Women’s champion, boasts a 9-5 record in AEW. However, all five of her losses have come in title matches or against former champions like Britt Baker. This match was seen as an opportunity for Baker to rebuild after her early loss in this year’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament (source: Cageside Seats).

The match between Baker and Valkyrie, however, was not without its flaws. The two spent most of the match trying to win the crowd back from a botched Road to Valhalla move. Despite the obvious outcome of the match, with Baker emerging victorious, it seems that the critics were not pacified (source: Wrestling Covers).

AEW production deserves credit for keeping a sign criticizing the match on screen for several seconds. This could be seen as owning up to their shortcomings. It remains to be seen how AEW will respond to the criticism and improve the booking of their women’s division (source: Wrestling Covers).
