California Championship Wrestling’s Controversial August 6, 1986 Show: Prepare to Be Shocked

Welcome to the world of professional wrestling! I’m Jeff Wolfe, your go-to source for all things pro wrestling. Today, we’re taking a trip back in time to August 6, 1986, as we review a show from the infamous California Championship Wrestling territory. Get ready for some old school action!

This particular show took place at Fender’s Ballroom in Long Beach, California, and was commentated by Barry Richards. California Championship Wrestling may not have had the best reputation, but that won’t stop us from diving into the action.

The opening match featured Golden Star taking on Junior Maivia. Star, a masked luchador, wasted no time in taking the fight to Maivia, knocking him outside the ring right at the bell. Maivia fought back, but it was Star who targeted his arm and controlled the majority of the match. However, Maivia managed to reverse Star’s offense and secured a surprise victory with a middle rope crossbody. This match may not have been the best in terms of production value, but the action was solid.

In the second match, we saw the legendary Rocky Johnson in action against Billy Anderson. Johnson, who had previously held the WWF Tag Team Championships, showcased his skills and star power in this match. He dominated Anderson with his signature dropkicks and finished him off with a running sunset flip. Johnson proved that he belonged in a bigger company, even in the low-budget California Championship Wrestling.

Next up, we had Victor Rivera and Chief Jay Strongbow Jr. teaming up against the formidable duo of Steve Strong and Professor Tanaka. This match quickly turned into a chaotic brawl, with both teams exchanging blows and the referee getting bumped. The match ended in a double disqualification, but the intensity of the brawl made it a standout moment on the show.

Following that, we witnessed a match between the mysterious Destroyin’ Samoan and Beartrap Smith. The Samoan, who was billed as a nephew of Afa and Sika, dominated Smith with his powerful headbutts. However, Smith managed to capitalize on a mistake by the Samoan and secured the victory with a less-than-impressive splash. This match showcased the caricature-like nature of California Championship Wrestling.

Finally, we had the legendary Jimmy Snuka taking on Steel Gladiator. Snuka, known for his high-flying style, seemed to be going through the motions in this match. Despite his lackluster effort, he managed to defeat Gladiator with a top rope headbutt. Snuka’s star power couldn’t save this match from being a disappointment.

Overall, this show from California Championship Wrestling left a lot to be desired. With the exception of Rocky Johnson’s match and the chaotic brawl, the rest of the card was filled with lackluster performances and low production values. It’s clear why this territory has gained a reputation as one of the worst in wrestling history.
