Clash Of The Champions #35 Review: Unveiling the Grand Finale

Welcome to another edition of Pro Wrestling Wars! I’m Jeff Wolfe, your go-to source for all things professional wrestling. Today, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to review Clash of the Champions XXXV, which took place on August 21, 1997, at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

This event marked the end of the Clash of the Champions series, and it went out with a bang. Four title matches were on the line, including the highly anticipated Tag Team Title match in the main event. The show was filled with new characters and storylines that kept WCW fans on the edge of their seats.

The night kicked off with a US Title match between Steve McMichael and Jeff Jarrett. The match was marred by interference from Debra, McMichael’s wife, who had been causing trouble within the Horsemen faction. In the end, McMichael walked away with the victory and the title, but the match received a lackluster rating of D.

Next up was a match between Stevie Richards and Raven. Raven, a loner who would later lead a cult called The Flock, defeated Richards in a No DQ match. The match received a rating of C-, as it served as a solid debut for Raven in WCW.

The TV Title was on the line in a match between Alex Wright and Ultimo Dragon. Dragon, who had recently turned face, defended his title against Wright, who had just lost the Cruiserweight Title. The match was a back-and-forth affair, with Wright ultimately coming out on top and capturing the TV Title. The match received a rating of B-.

Eddie Guerrero and Chris Jericho faced off for the Cruiserweight Title in what was undoubtedly the match of the night. These two talented performers put on a clinic, with Jericho ultimately retaining his title. The match received a rating of B-.

A lucha rules tag team match followed, pitting Villano IV, Villano V, Silver King, and Psychosis against Juventud Guerrera, Lizmark Jr., Super Calo, and Hector Garza. The match was a spot fest, with high-flying action and chaotic moments. The crowd was entertained, but the match received a rating of C.

The main event featured a tag team match between Ric Flair and Curt Hennig against Konnan and Syxx. This match was more about showcasing Flair and Hennig, as they were trying to recruit Hennig into the Horsemen faction. In the end, Flair and Hennig emerged victorious, but the match received a rating of D+.

The final match of the night was for the Tag Team Titles, with Lex Luger and Diamond Dallas Page taking on Randy Savage and Scott Hall. The match had an NWO birthday celebration theme, but it ultimately fell flat. Savage and Hall retained their titles, but the match received a rating of C-.

Overall, Clash of the Champions XXXV had its highs and lows. The show had some solid matches, such as the Cruiserweight Title match between Guerrero and Jericho, as well as the TV Title match between Wright and Dragon. However, some matches, like the main event, failed to deliver.
