Sonya Deville Makes History as New Women’s Tag Team Champion – WWE Officially Announces Championship Victory!

Chelsea Green and Piper Niven have been crowned the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, according to the official WWE roster page and title history page. This comes after Sonya Deville suffered a torn ACL during a non-title loss to Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair on the June 28 episode of SmackDown.

Deville’s injury was deemed serious, and she underwent surgery on August 8, putting her on the shelf indefinitely. Prior to her injury, Deville and Green had won the titles from Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez on the July 17 episode of RAW, but they were unable to defend the titles before Deville’s injury.

On this week’s episode of RAW, Green expressed her frustration to Adam Pearce about the titles. Before Pearce could strip Green and Deville of the titles, Green cut him off, criticizing his handling of the situation. She suggested holding auditions for a new partner and defending the titles as champions. Katana Chance and Kayden Carter interrupted, expressing their desire for a title shot once Green found a partner.

Unexpectedly, Piper Niven burst into the room, attacking Carter and Chance. She then grabbed one of the title belts and declared herself to be Green’s new tag team partner. Green and Niven left together, with Green no longer interested in holding auditions.

It is worth noting that the official WWE title history page credits Niven and Green’s title reign from July 17, the date of their victory, rather than this week’s RAW. This is the first tag team title reign for both Niven and Green.

There is no word yet on how WWE planned to address the Women’s Tag Team Titles after Deville’s injury was known. The original plan was expected to be revealed on RAW, but it did not happen.

Prior to her title win, Niven’s last match on RAW was a Triple Threat against Mia Yim and the winner, current WWE Women’s Champion IYO SKY, on the April 10 show. Her last televised match was a victory over Dana Brooke on the May 4 edition of WWE Main Event. Niven then competed in the WWE UK tour in late June, losing to Rodriguez on June 28 and June 29, and to Becky Lynch on June 30. Niven has not wrestled since then and only made her return to TV this week.
