There is no denying the immense power of Vince McMahon in the world of professional wrestling. Love him or hate him, McMahon holds the ability to make or break careers with a single decision. Recently, we have learned more about McMahon’s influence as he reportedly scrapped a storyline due to a TMZ report.
In 2015, WWE was running a storyline involving two couples: Dolph Ziggler and Lana, and Summer Rae and Rusev. However, the storyline came to an abrupt end when TMZ revealed that Rusev and Lana had gotten engaged in real life, despite feuding on WWE TV. According to an interview with Rae conducted by Chris Van Vliet, McMahon and the top WWE writers were invested in the story. However, upon the TMZ report, the entire storyline was scrapped, and Rusev and Lana eventually found themselves working together again.
While the decision to cancel the storyline may not have made much sense to some, as it was no secret that Rusev and Lana were a real-life couple, it is not surprising coming from McMahon. He has a reputation for being extremely protective of his company’s image and can be quick to react to anything that may tarnish it.
McMahon’s ability to control the narrative in the wrestling world is unparalleled. He has the power to push someone to the moon and make them a star, or crush a story and bury a talent. This incident serves as a reminder that ultimately, it is McMahon’s world, and his decisions shape the direction of WWE.
