On Friday’s episode of WWE SmackDown, Santos Escobar emerged victorious in the finals of the WWE United States Title Invitational, defeating the legendary Rey Mysterio. The match concluded with a referee stoppage after Mysterio required medical attention following Escobar’s suicide dive just before the commercial break. As a result, Escobar earned the opportunity to challenge WWE United States Champion Austin Theory on the post-SummerSlam edition of SmackDown, scheduled for August 11.
However, recent reports from Fightful Select indicate that Mysterio’s injury is legitimate and not simply a part of the storyline, as initially believed. Multiple sources have confirmed that Mysterio’s participation on SmackDown was unplanned, leading to an audible being called during the match. Additionally, a backstage follow-up segment that was intended to air had to be scrapped due to the circumstances.
At this time, there is no information available regarding the extent of Mysterio’s absence from the ring. Fans and fellow wrestlers alike will be eagerly awaiting updates on his condition.
